Keyboard:Understand the two types of black keys — sharps and flats

In the online Keyboard course at Zelus Academy, understanding sharps and flats is fundamental for mastering scales and melodies. The black key to the right of A is called A# (A sharp), and the black key to the left of A is Ab (A flat). A simple rule to remember is: sharp keys are to the right, and flat keys are to the left.

When you move from A to A#, you are making a half-step or semi-tone movement. This refers to the smallest distance between two keys. On the other hand, when you move from A to B (the white key on its right), you skip over the black key (A#) and take a whole step or tone. This concept of half-steps and whole steps is crucial in understanding how scales are formed in Keyboard online learning.

By practicing these steps in the online Keyboard course, you'll improve your ability to navigate between the white and black keys, preparing you for more complex pieces and enhancing your understanding of musical theory. Keep practicing, and you'll quickly gain confidence in playing scales and chords with ease! Continue reading
