Roman numerals are often used to represent chords within a scale: uppercase numerals indicate major chords, while lowercase numerals indicate minor chords. This system helps identify chord relatives, allowing you to easily connect related chords in a scale.
In the C Major scale, for instance, you have the following chord relationships:
- I (C Major) and vi (A Minor)
- IV (F Major) and ii (D Minor)
- V (G Major) and iii (E Minor)
To get familiar with these relationships, practice playing these chords with your right hand. As you do so, use your left hand to play the root of each chord to provide a solid bass foundation. For example, while playing C Major (C-E-G) with your right hand, your left hand should play the note C. Similarly, when playing A Minor (A-C-E) with your right hand, the left hand plays A.
