Learning Drums: Switching to the ride cymbal

In Zelus Academy’s online drums course, you’ll learn to play a variety of grooves, enhancing your rhythmic versatility. Let’s dive into the specifics of an eighth note groove and a 6/8 groove, both essential for any drummer’s repertoire.

Eighth Note Groove:

  1. Ride Cymbal Pattern: Play the ride cymbal on counts 1–2–3–4.
  2. Ride Bell Accents: Add accents on the bell of the ride cymbal on the “&” of 1–2–3–4.
  3. Snare Drum Placement: Hit the snare drum on counts 2 and 4.
  4. Kick Drum Foundation: Place the kick drum on counts 1 and 3.

This groove helps you develop coordination and timing, as you’ll need to manage playing different parts of the ride cymbal while maintaining a steady backbeat with the snare and kick drum.

6/8 Groove:

  1. Counting and Ride Cymbal: Start by counting from 1 to 6, and play the ride cymbal on every count.
  2. Kick Drum Timing: Play the kick drum on count 1.
  3. Snare Drum Placement: Hit the snare drum on count 4.

This groove introduces you to the unique feel of 6/8 time, which is commonly used in various musical styles. Practicing this pattern will enhance your ability to adapt to different time signatures and rhythms.
