Learning Drums: Playing a beat – quarter note grooves

In Zelus Academy’s online drums course, you’ll learn the essential rhythms that form the foundation of drumming. Two classic grooves that are fundamental to your drumming repertoire are the Classic Two Note Groove and the Waltz Beat.

Classic Two Note Groove:

  1. Count 1: Play a single stroke on the hi-hat and kick drum together.
  2. Count 2: Follow with a single stroke on the hi-hat and snare drum together.
  3. Count 3 and 4: Repeat the pattern with the hi-hat and kick drum on count 3, and the hi-hat and snare drum on count 4.

Waltz Beat:

  1. Count 1: Play a single stroke on the hi-hat and kick drum together.
  2. Counts 2 and 3: Play single strokes on the hi-hat and snare drum together.

Practical Tips:

  • Slow Tempo: Start practicing at a slower tempo to ensure precision and consistency in your playing.
  • Metronome: Use a metronome to maintain a steady rhythm and improve your timing.
  • Gradual Increase: Gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable with each groove.

Exercise:

  1. Warm-Up: Begin with basic single strokes on the hi-hat to get a feel for the rhythm.
  2. Classic Two Note Groove: Incorporate the kick drum and snare drum as described, practicing each step slowly and steadily.
  3. Waltz Beat: Shift to the waltz pattern, focusing on the distinctive three-count rhythm and maintaining the steady pulse on the hi-hat.

By mastering these grooves, you’ll build a strong foundation in drumming. Zelus Academy’s online drums course offers comprehensive lessons, detailed demonstrations, and personalized feedback from experienced instructors to help you progress effectively.
