Learning Drums: Getting creative around triplets

Understanding rhythm and counting is fundamental in drumming. In Zelus Academy’s online drums course, we emphasize mastering different note values and grooves to build a strong rhythmic foundation. Here’s a guide to help you learn how to count and play triplet grooves:

Counting Triplets:

Triplets divide a beat into three equal parts, providing a distinct rhythmic feel. The counting method for triplets is “1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let.” To internalize this rhythm, start by clapping:

  • First Clap: On “1”
  • Second Clap: On “Trip”
  • Third Clap: On “Let”

Repeat this sequence for each beat in a measure.

Practice Steps:

Clap It Out:

  • Begin by clapping the triplet rhythm. Count out loud as you clap: “1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let.” This helps in internalizing the triplet feel.

Apply to Drums:

  • Hi-Hat: Play the triplets on the hi-hat while maintaining the “1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let” count.
  • Snare and Kick: Integrate the snare drum on the “let” of each triplet and the kick drum on the “1” of each triplet.

Full Groove:

  • Combine the triplet hi-hat pattern with alternating snare and kick. For example:
  • Kick on “1”
  • Hi-hat on “trip”
  • Snare on “let”

Practice Regularly:

  • Consistent practice helps in mastering the triplet groove. Use a metronome to keep time and gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable.

Tips for Mastery:

  • Focus on Consistency: Ensure each note is evenly spaced.
  • Start Slow: Begin at a slower tempo and gradually increase speed.
  • Use a Metronome: This helps in maintaining a steady rhythm.
